Out with the Old & In with the New: Strengthen Your Belief System by Disempowering Your Inner Critic
Apr 14, 2025Do you have an "inner critic" that seems to follow you around?
A tiny voice—or maybe a loud one—saying:
“You’re not good enough.”
“You can’t do it.”
“You’re not clutch.”
If so, you’re not alone. These thoughts are symptoms of a weakening belief system, one that robs you of confidence, presence, and peace. I know, because I used to battle these same thoughts as a player:
- Not athletic enough to play quarterback.
- I don’t have a strong enough arm.
- I can’t perform in the clutch.
These thoughts followed me for years… until I came across the work of Wayne Dyer. His teachings opened my eyes to a powerful truth: your belief system isn’t fixed—it can be rebuilt. And it starts with how you think on a daily basis.
Through his words, I began creating my own exercises to rewire my mindset and replace disempowering thoughts with empowering ones. One of those exercises is what I’m sharing with you today:
Mind Strength Exercise: "Out with the Old & In with the New"
Let’s use this quote from Wayne Dyer as our guiding principle:
“A higher concept of yourself involves taking on new truths and shedding your old views of what you can achieve.”
Step 1: List the Old (Your Inner Critic)
Grab a pen/paper or use the notes on your phone and write down three “Inner Critic” thoughts that show up in your sport. These are the doubts that seem to follow you wherever you go.
Here were mine early in my career:
• Not athletic enough to play Quarterback
• Don’t have a strong enough arm
• Can’t perform in the clutch
If you can’t think of three, write down as many as you can. And if you’re the rare unicorn who doesn’t wrestle with self-doubt, still go through the exercise— in case you need it one day.
Stay tuned next week as we dive into Step 2—to help you identify where these thoughts were created.
